He met various writers, painters, and musicians befriending, among others,Pierre Gaxotte, Maurice Sachs, Jean Ozenne and his cousin Christian Berard, Max Jacob, and Henri Sauguet.In 1927, after his military service and with his father’s support, he opened an art gallery at 34, rue de la Boetie, with the name of his associate, Jacques Bonjean. The gallery exhibited the works of such contemporary artists as Giorgio de Chirico, Maurice Utrillo, Salvador Dali, Raoul Dufy, Marie Laurencin, Fernand Leger, Jean Lucat, Pablo Picasso, Ossip Zadkine, Georges Braque, and Aristide Maillol.

After the War, Marcel Boussac, president of the cotton-marketing syndicate, offers to finance Dior’s own couture house. At the age of forty-two he presents his first collection “Corolle Line,” which was named by the press “The New Look,” and achieved insurmountable success. The collection was accompanied by the launch of his first perfume, Miss Dior. His “New Look” creations were a composition of rounded shoulders, shapely emphasis of the bust, cinched waists, and curvaceous bell-shaped skirts in luxurious fabrics. In 1947 Dior received the Neiman Marcus Award. The following year, he set up the subsidiary Christian Dior New York, Inc., and branches were set up in Caracas, Australia, Chile, Mexico and Cuba. The “New Look” was Christian Dior’s passport to the American market. During the 50s, the House of Dior was alone responsible for half of all Paris’s couture export to the United States.

Christian Dior’s costume jewelry and other accessories were selected to complement his fashions. Their production was limited. Dior was the first designer to use Aurora Borealis rhinestones. Unlike many other fashion designers at the time, Dior gave painstaking attention to detail in his jewelry, making it clear that these accessories were not a mere afterthought. They were a major, essential aspect of his collections, to be taken as seriously as the lavish clothes he designed. Dior’s affinity with the French countryside was evident in his jewelry collections, which featured many pieces inspired by wild roses and lily of the valley flowers. Figural designs of animals were also a recurring theme.

All of Dior’s jewelry pieces were signed and dated. There are a number of designers who have made collections for Dior over a small period of time. Mitchell Maer held the jewelry license for Dior jewelry from 1950 to 1957; in the United States Kramer of New York held the jewelry license from 1950 to 1957; and also Henkel and Grosse, Josette Gripoix, and Kramer. In particular, Mitchell Maer pieces, designed between 1952 and 1956 are highly sought after. Dior’s costume jewelry was signed Christian Dior inside an oval.

In 1948 the Christian Dior perfume company was set up; it launched Diorama; in 1949, followed by Eau Fraiche 1953 and Diorissimo 1956 His future collections unveiled the finest tailoring and the most sumptuous fabrics: satins, traditional suiting, fine wools, taffetas, and lavish embroideries. His creations were frequently distinguished by ornaments that came directly from pre 1914 fashion.

Christian Dior is considered one of the most famous fashion designers of both the 20th and 21st centuries. In 1957, Dior died of a heart attack at the age of fifty-two in Bagni de Montecatini, Italy. After his death, Marcel Boussac, Dior’s partner appointed Ives Saint Laurent as artistic director, he was followed by Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, and John Galliano; who has reinvigorated the house of Dior and once again brought renown to the Dior name.
I've been artistic for as long as I remember, At the present time, I am finding the most joy in creating jewelry from wire and beads that I create in my home studio in northern Wisconsin.

Mostly I prefer gemstones, but I use a variety of bead materials like; pearls, glass, wood, bone, clay, nuts and other materials from Mother Earth, to combine with my wire work.

The wire I use is Argentium® Sterling Silver, but I have included 14K gold-filled and copper wire as well. Most of the silver beads are traditional sterling silver, like the beads from Thailand, India, Bali, Turkey, Israel and some other countries as well. No plated silver is used. Some of my older pieces shown in the online gallery are made using traditional sterling silver. The description will state if Argentium® Sterling silver is used. All of the gold is 14K gold-filled, but sometimes gold vermeil is used. Vermeil is 100 millionths of an inch of gold layered over sterling silver, making it 50 times heavier than gold plating. No standard plated gold is used in my pieces.

Each piece I create is a journey. Sometimes I know where the journey will end and sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I travel with another; those are the times that someone requests a custom piece with the materials and colors that they choose. I very much enjoy co-creating jewelry in this way. I am very accommodating to create just what you want, and custom sizing is available on any piece.

The metaphysical properties of the gemstones are of much interest to me, and I also am interested in the effect that colors have on our well being. In my own life I have seen the results of this, for example, wearing amethyst gives me a clear perspective, an inner knowing; and the color blue brings me to a place of peace and comforting.
When a piece of jewelry is complete, it goes into a copper Genesa Sphere for a few hours to a few days. Like the magical runes of a fantasy adventure, birthstones have been used for thousands of years to create health, protect good fortune, and to ward off evil spirits. But not many people realize the deep significance of birthstones in religion, astrology, and their important part in ancient history.

The tradition of the birthstone dates back thousands of years. While virtually all cultures have used special stones to divine and channel helpful energies, historians trace their use among Western peoples to the Book of Exodus, and a sacred piece of armor that was forged to bring a desperate people together.

During Israel's time wandering the desert, legend says that the Hebrew high priest Aaron built a special breastplate embedded with twelve stones. The gold filigree breastplate was said to be quite small - only the width of a human hand. The stones were set in four rows and represented the twelve tribes of Israel, the twelve signs of the Zodiac, and the months of the year. Every tribe had its seal inscribed on the face of their respective stone. One interpretation of Exodus states these original stones were ruby, beryl, topaz, turquoise, sapphire, emerald, jacinth, agate, amethyst, chrysoprasus, and jasper. But since ancient people did not classify gemstones the same as modern geologists, there is some uncertainty as to which stones were used.

Over time, different cultures began assigning different stones to different uses. While modern lists include twelve stones set to closely correspond with traditional and some ancient birthstone catalogs, nonetheless many other lists have appeared in the past. There is also some belief that gemstones should be assigned not according to month but to astrological (Zodiac) signs. The modern birthstone system very closely resembles that used by the ancient Roman Empire. The Romans were meticulous timekeepers and arranged the birthstones according to their calendar.

Beginning in the 20th Century, birthstones became very popular in jewelry design and baby jewelry design, with the gift of a birthstone meant to commemorate a birth, a birthday, or simply to bestow the giver's best wishes for good health and good fortune. Some practitioners of New Age healing assign different properties to various stones and gems, including cures for common ailments such as arthritis, allergies, and headaches.

In America, the modern birthstone calendar was formalized in 1912 by the Jewelers of America association, and their list is now used not just in the United States but also in many other parts of the world. Over time, the list has been amended to include similar, but less expensive, alternates to the various stones. Those alternates are given in parenthesis below:

The story of Hawaiian jewelry began in the late 1800's when King Kalakaua visited the Royal Courts of England. He was then presented with a gift for Princess Liliuokalani at Queen Victoria's Jubilee. The solid gold design was simple with intricate Old English lettering, which spelled the princess' name. The bracelet symbolized enduring friendship between the two nations. Liliuokalani was very impressed with the style and requested more be crafted for other members of her family. Goldsmiths throughout the land were then commissioned to learn this art of jewelry crafting. At the time of Prince Albert's death, bracelets were made in his remembrance by request of Queen Victoria and Queen Liliuokalani. Enameled lettering was used in reflecting the loss of their beloved Prince.

The tradition has since continued throughout the generations. Hawaiian heirloom jewelry has been given as a gifts for special occasions such as birthdays, graduations and weddings. Heirloom jewelry will last a lifetime, and is often passed from generations. It is considered an honor to receive such a precious, personalized gift.

Today, Hawaiian heirloom jewelry is hand crafted, as it has always been. Although Hawaiian bracelets are the most traditional style of heirloom jewelry, more variations have surfaced over the years. You can find rings, vertical pendants, horizontal necklaces, and even id bracelets, each with their own unique design and personalization. With this amazing craft, it is no wonder that this tradition has lasted and grown through the years.

Commissioned by our Queen to be, Queen Liliu’okalani, after the death of Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert, the bracelet made in Hawaii, originally was a symbol of the Queens royalty, and its responsibilities.

The whole Victorian world used black in jewelry designs from the death of the consort, until after Queen Victoria's death January 21st, 1901.
At first the style was mourning jewelry, then popular jewelry, then Vogue. Hoomanao Mau
In Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani’s first bracelet evolved to symbolize, the Hawaiian spirit, goodness, and family.
Aloha Oe As we travel down the years with the Hawaiian Jewelry we see the changes that are now familiar, but actually groundbreaking as the style of the Hawaiian Jewelry emerged, developed, and took hold in the islands; and of course later became a symbol to all people with a relationship to Hawaii,
as a symbol of that relationship.
The original Old English lettering, and symbols of the first bracelet, evolved into the gift of the “Aloha Oe” bracelet to Zoe Atkinson, September 5th, 1893. Zoe, a principal of an all girls school here in Hawaii, assisted the Queen in Palace balls,
and musicals.
The Queen’s gift to Zoe, arrived 12 days before the end of the monarchy, and afterwards became the desire for the school girls whose parents had them made for them.

As they passed down these precious bracelets the word Heirloom was added to the Hawaiian Jewelry, and a momentum of passion, and family values had begun.
Old English designs evolved on the bracelets from the European jewelers living in the islands, as they replicated the European styles. Then as the culture of the bracelet grew, island familiar designs began showing up on the bracelets, mail leaf, Plumeria and Hibiscus flowers were featured.

In the 1980's with the manufacture of motorized cutters, a new style augmented the glass enameled letters, these machines and their cutters could cut around and clean out the surrounding metal and leave "raised letters". These grew to be extremely popular, and engulfed a whole new group of people who loved the jewelry, with preference for the gold raised lettering.

In the 1990's the engravers latched on to the idea that the designs could be extended to the edge of the bracelets, and then scalloped around. This left the designs bigger without the boarders, and gave the bracelets a larger than life look and feel to them. Any bracelet could have a scalloped design and still use the enamel or raised lettering.
Also in the 90's the use of different colored gold started to become fashionable. Pink, green, and white, either by themselves or in multi-color designs were finding their way into the market place.

Still very recognizable as Hawaiian Heirloom Jewelry, yet more world class in their application and again appealing to an even wider group of customers.
As CNC machining became more available at the end of the 90's, and into the millennium, raised enameling became possible, and somewhat popular, allowing more intricate design, all the while the rest of the bracelets engraving was done by hand, as it had been done since the 1860's.
Tri-Color Gold Design
In 2008, with the advent of laser cutting machines, new applications such as Kalakoa lettering could be achieved, lettering that was a different color that the background. Letters were cut precisely using laser cutters, and then fitted into exact channels to be soldered. This new look was fantastic, and very "upscale” for the jewelry.
Today there is Hawaiian Heirloom jewelry from traditional to contemporary. Still keeping its legacy as a talisman of the Hawaiian society. Not just locals but thousands, and thousands of people from all over the world embrace the Island jewelry as their symbol of the family of Aloha.

For our Queen, affectionately known as, ”Liliu’unamoku” or "Liliu, of the islands", it would certainly be a thrill to see how her first bracelet spanned the years to give us such joy.
