Jose Juan Garcia Alfaro has been an Artisan Silver and Goldsmith for the past 30 years. Originally from Mexico, Juan now lives in Southern Oregon, with his wife and two children—his family being his true masterpiece of art.

Juan’s interest to create jewelry was a genuine necessity in the first period of life. Juan did not play with other children, but played in the trees and in the woods, and created jewelry utilizing materials that were accessible to him. Juan’s first pieces were made out of industrial material from his father’s plumbing work, and kitchen scraps from his mother’s cooking.

The first time Juan left the mountains of the outskirts of Mexico City where his family lived—to go downtown in order to purchase non-precious metals for his jewelry—Juan discovered a whole new world. Juan met other artisan jewelers, and began to learn from them by means of ‘street apprenticeships.’ After learning through ‘street apprenticeships’ for 5 years, Juan had the opportunity to go to the School of Artisans in Mexico City. Learning and using the correct jewelry technique, changed Juan’s life as a jeweler forever.

Juan’s work is a rich combination of Mexican jewelry tradition, with techniques, design and style of his own. Juan is intimately connected to Art Nouveau style, filigree and granulation, and is also attracted to contemporary design. Through his jewelry, Juan expresses both a deep love and an agreement he has with Nature—an agreement to respect and maintain the richness of her beauty.

Juan has attempted to dedicate himself to other trades in life, but always returns back to jewelry and metal creation. The forms and designs Juan sees in the world call upon him to give life and expression of this beauty through jewelry—offering wearable art to the people.
