Jewelry Design Biography
Source(google.com.pk)Butler & Wilson is a highly respected British design team made up of designers Niki Butler and Simon Wilson. Born in Scotland, Simon Wilson loved design and art since childhood. He gave up engineering courses to explore his interest in jewelry design. Niki Butler and Simon Wilson started their business in stalls at several London markets, starting out at Portobello Road in 1968 and establishing a permanent stall at the prestigious indoor market Antiquarius in King's Road in 1970. They collected and sold Art Nouveau and Art Deco Jewelry and soon began to design their own jewelry linked to the fashion trends of the time.
In 1972, Butler & Wilson opened their first shop on Fulham road in London, England. In 1975, Wilson and Butler added their first original designs to their Art Deco collection. It became a sensation. Some of their creations were inspired by the Scottish brooches and daggers of the Victorian period, others by 1920s style harlequins or Art Nouveau dragonflies.
In 1982, Butler & Wilson achieved great recognition when the Fulham Road store was extended and became recognizable for its billboards, featuring Jerry Hall and Catherine Deneuve. In 1983, Butler & Wilson opened their first concession in Harrods. Their jewelry became the top seller in Harrods for many years, and the brand became synonymous with glamour.
Butler & Wilson became one of the leading designers of the 1980s. Their fake sparklers became trendier than gold and platinum and, with shops and outlets in America, Butler & Wilson’s creations attracted a wide following. Those who could not afford the originals bought fakes. Diamanté and fake pearls, enamels, plastics, and mother of pearl were utilized in their creations, and stones were obtained from the Austrian manufacturer, Swarovski, who made the finest crystal gemstones. Massive paste bow brooches, earrings like chandeliers and deep, choker-like collars adorned the world’s most glamorous women. Among them the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who was a frequent visitor to the shop in London's Fulham Road; Kate Moss, Sharon Stone, Dame Edna Everage, and Faye Dunaway.
Butler & Wilson’s most famous designs included the articulated lizard, the teddy bear, Christmas jewelry, the high-domed spider pin, the waltzing couple, the crown, the Scottie dog, the elephant, and the monkey.
In 1984, Wilson created Celtic Boys, his own collection of men's jewelry, inspired by the Victorian Scottish jewelry he collects. His diamanté military medals were a sensation when shown with Ralph Lauren’s cashmere jackets. Giorgio Armani commissioned a range of jewelry for his own collection such as coins, crowns, swords, heraldic devices and fleur-de-lis; all appeared as stunning jewelry that complemented the couturier’s art.
In the mid eighties Simon Wilson took over the business when his partner, Nicky Butler went to America. Nicky wanted to expand and live in the US, and Simon wanted to stay in London. So the famous team parted. Nicky now designs silver and gemstone jewelry, very distinctive and very recognizable inspired by antique museum collections and Indian jewelry using multiple and over sized stones. Like Simon, Nicky has sold through television shopping channels (HSN) and still retains a consultancy role in the Wilson and Butler Company to this day.
During 1994, Wilson linked up with the QVC shopping channel and made a fortune. Alongside the Buck House collection, Butler & Wilson oversaw the Imperial Jewelry collection at the Tower of London. And they started to diversify: the Fulham shop started carrying vintage clothes, handbags, and bridal wear. Since 2000, the partners began experimenting with semi-precious stones, such as opal, turquoise and onyx and noting that men were happier with solidly expensive jewelry than with paste “euphoria” they launched a men's jewelry collection in 2005 full of silver and semiprecious items. The collection featured turquoise rings and man-bags in cool Amerindian designs, which was added to the list of their great successes.
Today’s products from Butler & Wilson include earrings, bags, necklaces, brooches and bracelets. Some of their products include new clear multi oval elaborate necklaces, small crystal owl brooches, small crystal guitar brooches, pearl cluster bracelets, and three flower crystal snap bangles. They also offer a bridal range that includes items such as tiaras, earrings, necklaces and bags for special occasions. Butler & Wilson also produce jewelry and accessories for men. The product line-up for men includes silver crosses, belt buckles and necklaces.
Butler & Wilson also manufactures a collection called the Skull collection, designed with materials ranging from crystal to leather that featured jeweled skull flat caps, crystal skull red brooches, silver skulls with wings and feather drop pendants, and silver skulls with star eye patch pendants, among others.
The fact that Butler & Wilson's costume jewelry is confused for the real thing is proof of its quality.
